Information About East London
  • The East End of London, also known simply as the East End, is the area of London, England.
  • The East End developed rapidly during the 19th century.
  • The term 'East End' was first applied to the districts immediately to the east of, and entirely outside, the medieval walled City of London and north of the River Thames.
  • By the late 19th century, the East End roughly corresponded to the Tower division of Middlesex.
  • Many East Enders are 'Cockneys', although this term has both a geographic and a linguistic connotation.
  • A traditional definition is that to be a Cockney, one had to be born within the sound of Bow Bells, situated in Cheapside.
  • In general, the sound pattern would cover most of the City, and parts of the near East End such as Aldgate and Whitechapel.
  • The 2012 Summer Olympics and Paralympics will be held in an Olympic Park created on former industrial land around the River Lee.
  • It is intended that this should leave a legacy of new sports facilities, housing, and industrial and technical infrastructure that will further help regenerate the area.
  • Much of the area remains, however, one of the poorest in Britain and contains some of the capital's worst deprivation.
  • The image of the East Ender changed dramatically between the 19th century and the 20th.
